How Pilates Shaped John Garey’s Life

John Garey got his start in the fitness industry in the mid-’80s—he hasn’t stopped since. First, a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from NYU, then a fitness center job in Weehawken, NJ. That was the job that got him hooked on teaching group exercise. As they say, the rest is history.

John Garey Is a Pilates Powerhouse

John Garey is traditionally trained in Pilates. Yet, he’s developed his own style over time—and that style has moved and shaped Pilates at large. He brings athleticism and fun into his approach. People keep coming back for more because they love it and it brings them joy (not to mention the positive impacts on your body and mind).

Pilates has a bunch of styles: classical, dancey, and therapeutic, to name a few. John’s style is athletic and fun. His style evolved based on his experience and knowledge in traditional fitness, such as strength training, mobility training, and balance. Combined with his mastery of the traditional pilates repertoire, his workout programs are unique and effective. That’s why he’s a Pilates powerhouse.

 The Values That
Drive John Garey Pilates

John Garey is on a mission to make Pilates fun and approachable. He wants everyone who is interested to experience Pilates—and share his love of fitness. He wants more Pilates teachers out there in the world inspiring health and wellness. John believes in transparency and freedom of information: he offers breakdowns of classes and exercises and loves answering questions about fitness.

“I am always looking for ways to improve—as a human, a teacher, and a mover.”

- John Garey

John is driven by personal movement and transformation. It’s why he pursued a path in health and fitness. On that path, he’s never stopped learning. Personally, he’s drawn to books, authors, and leaders that help him grow. While he has an eclectic taste in subjects, it all has to do with balance. That desire to grow, learn, and balance percolates through his work as a teacher as he honestly shares what he is working on or going through.

Meet Joana Menses

I'm JO. BodyRoots Founder, LiquidRoots Retreats Leader, 20 year New Yorker/Azorean, and self-proclaimed Karaoke Queen.

I love being the first Azorean most people meet and like the off-the-beaten-path paradise I was fortunate to be born in, I help people move "outside the box". As a 20-year full-time Fitness Pro, I strive to combine movement in ways that compliment all of my certifications to make you forget you're working. You have enough jobs. To me, movement is poetry and every BODY should have the honor of writing its own.

Always grateful, but endlessly hungry for growth and new challenges, I invest in my craft by searching out and training with the best coaches, with the goal of passing along all that I've learned. I feel privileged to combine the best of my island roots with my North American and European worlds while realizing my ancestors' hard worked for dreams. I am all about balancing our Power with our Pause and welcome the opportunity to help others find their own life's movement poetry.
